In this spotlight, we will focus on alumina, a key raw material for aluminium smelting. The price of alumina has been traditionally expressed as a percentage of the LME aluminium 3-Months price, as illustrated by the chart on the right. Alumina supply contracts are typically for terms of 5-20 years, with the percentage negotiated every year. In China, spot transactions are more common and prices vary depending on the supplier.
