In the last Monitor, we said that China's H1 -2010 demand was down 2% from H1 -2009. With more data, we have lowered this to a 3% decrease. This conclusion seems high compared with the views of some companies in China that think total demand for 2010 will be down 10% to 20%. But the conclusion of a 3% decrease for H1 is consistent with the data on imports of tubes, preforms, and drawn fibre. It is consistent with information from some major suppliers about the amount of fibre and cable they have made so far this year. And there also has been information that China Mobile and China Telecom have had fairly strong first halves, although China Unicom is behind its 2009 rate of deployments.
