摘要

Rehabilitation following stroke has the potential to make a very significant and lasting impact on outcomes of the person with stroke. The knowledge base that would allow informed decisions about content, location, and dose of the rehabilitation intervention is incomplete. Some high-quality evidence does exist, including important studies from New Zealand or international studies with input from New Zealand. This article focuses attention on what rehabilitation clinicians can do now, based on current evidence, to optimize the content and dose of rehabilitation in the first year after acute stroke, particularly in the community phase of rehabilitation. Promoting self-directed rehabilitation may offer the greatest potential for change at little cost.
