LyondellBasell Restarts Methanol Plant Closed in 2004 on High Nat Gas Prices

Houston— LyondellBasell has restarted a methanol plant at its Chan-nelview, Texas, site that was taken out of service in 2004 because of the rising cost of natural gas feedstock (PCN, 25 Oct 2004, p 1). When the 780,000-t/y plant was shut down, the company told PCN it was "looking at other options" for the facility, which had been producing methanol solely for Methanex. The restart is intended to take advantage of low-cost natural gas now available from shale formations, and is the first in a series of U.S. Gulf Coast projects based on that cost advantage (PCN, 12 Dec 2011, p 3).
