Brazil's GranBio Speeds Development Of Cellulosic Sugars with Acquisition

Atlanta-Brazilian biochemicals and biofuels pioneer GranBio has acquired a 25% interest in cleantech process development firm American Process Inc., gaining access to a proprietary biomass pretreatment platform that makes it possible to cost-effectively develop cellulosic sugars as a feedstock for a variety of biochemicals and biofuels. GranBio said the investment is a strategic move, as the pretreatment solution developed by American Process also fulfills the stringent specifications required for producing biochemicals. "With this platform, we will be able to expand GranBio's activities to other products beyond cellulosic ethanol," explained Bernardo Gradin, president of GranBio and former chief executive of Braskem.
