International nongovernmental organisation (NGO) Global Witness in December last year announced its departure from the Kimberley Process (KP) Certification Scheme. The organisation has revealed to Mining Weekly that it does not believe the right questions were asked when clearance from the scheme was awarded to Zimbabwe. The organisation states that negotiators from the KP, who struck a deal with the Zimbabwe government in 2010 to allow the sale of diamonds from its Marange fields in international markets, asked whether adequate security and antismuggling operations were in place for the trade of rough diamonds to continue.
