Diversified miner builds homes from gypsum

The eMalahleni water reclamation plant, which produces gypsum as from its acid mine drainage treatment process, has found a sustainable use for the by-product. The gypsum is being used to replace traditional building products, and has resulted in a 66-unit employee housing project in the KwaMthunzi village, west of eMalahleni. A further 300 homes are planned. The eMalahleni water reclamation plant is a joint development between global diversified miner Anglo American and diversified mining major BHP Billiton, in South Africa's Mpumalanga province.
