When the Horse Drinks: Enhancing Everyday Creativity Using Elements of Improvisation

A qualitative approach was used to investigate the elements of improvisation and why they are being used in a variety of fields to enhance creative, innovative thinking. Seven individuals from diverse disciplines, who all incorporate improvisational techniques in their work, were interviewed. Analysis using Patton's (1990) constant comparison method identified elements of improvisation that parallel the ingredients considered necessary for creative thinking. The elements that emerged from this research were communication, community/teamwork, honest emotional expression, risk/challenge, safety, self-actualization, and joy. Suggestions are offered for incorporating elements of improvisation into everyday activities and educational settings to enhance creative, innovative thinking and personal growth.
