Research Spur--Increased mining activity an opportunity to grow R&D, says SAIMM president

The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) says the current increased levels of mining activity in South Africa and Southern Africa present the industry with a perfect opportunity to grow Southern African research and development (R&D), which, for many years, has been nurtured on other continents, such as Europe and Australia. SAIMM president Dr Gys Landman reports that initiatives such as the newly launched South African Minerals to Metals Research Institute, will go a long way towards increasing South Africa's capacity in R&D; however, more can be done by taking advantage of present market conditions.
