Despite the uranium equity markets declining over the past three months, the midterm outlook for yellowcake was seemingly positive, equity research company Resource Capital Research (RCR) said last week. "The contract uranium price has started moving up again, reflecting the fact that nuclear remains a key aspect of energy policy for many countries, including China, India, Russia and the US," said RCR MD John Wilson."There are currently 489 nuclear energy reactors planned or proposed globally, seven more than prior to Fukushima, and this is expected to drive a large increase in uranium demand [in the] midterm to long term."He said the near-term demand outlook for uranium remained finely balanced, adding that, while Japan had announced the restart of two of its 50 reactors, and more restarts were expected over the next year, potential risk of utility surplus dispositions remained in the meantime.
