US Extends Russian Sanctions

US President Barack Obama has effectively decided to extend sanctions against Russian individuals first introduced two years ago over Russia's role in the Ukraine crisis by another 12 months. Sanctions on certain Russian companies and a ban on the transfer of deepwater and Arctic drilling technology to Russia are also set to remain in force. According to a White House statement, Obama decided to maintain "the national emergency" declared in an executive order on Mar. 6, 2014 "to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States constituted by the actions and policies of persons that undermine democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine."
