Although the collapse in oil prices has blown a big hole in Newfoundland and Labrador's finances, the momentum built up by the province's offshore oil industry over the past couple of years has helped shield Canada's eastern - most province from dramatic cutbacks in exploration and production activity so far. The main exception so far has been Husky Energy's announcement in December that it will defer making a final investment decision on its West White Rose offshore oil field extension project for a year. First production at the White Rose extension had originally been anticipated in 2017 but may now be pushed back by as much as three years.
