NAM to Appeal Damages Ruling

NAM, the Royal Dutch Shell/Exxon Mobil joint venture that produces most of the gas in the Netherlands, will appeal a court ruling earlier this month that it must pay out substantial compensation to homeowners, Dutch media reported on Friday. On Sep. 2, NAM was told it must pay out the full loss of value on houses due to earthquakes caused by gas extraction activities at the giant onshore Groningen field. The case, mounted by local residents group WAG, did not detail the amount to be paid -- but a lawyer representing owners of almost 100,000 houses predicted that NAM might end up paying ?5 billion ($5.6 billion).
