Southeast Asia Set to Become Net Gas Importer

Southeast Asia's gas demand is forecast to grow by nearly 70%, turning the region from a key global exporter today into a net importer of the fuel by 2040, according to the International Energy Agency. By 2040, the region is expected to see its energy demand grow by 80% to reach just under 1.1 billion tons of oil equivalent as the regional economy triples in size, accompanied by a nearly 25% growth in population topping 760 million. Gas demand is expected to reach 265 Bcm while coal demand is expected to reach 440 million tons of coal equivalent and overtake oil to become the largest fuel in the region's energy mix. Oil demand is expected to grow from 4.7 million b/d in 2014 to 6.8 million b/d in 2040.
