Weak Pricing, Higher Costs Trip Up Chesapeake

Chesapeake Energy saw its turnaround hopes tripped up during the fourth quarter of 2014, with weak price realizations and some stagnation of its "weapons-grade" attack on costs underwhelming investors. Chief Executive Doug Lawler has been attacking what he sees as a bloated and inefficient cost structure at the US independent since landing the job at the company in mid-2013. The goal for Lawler is for Chesapeake to become a top-tier operator in terms of returns and profitability, not simply on size, as was the case under his predecessor, Aubrey McClendon.
