Ruling May Boost Fuel Shipments Between US Ports

A letter sent by the US Customs Department earlier this year may make it cheaper for US refiners to ship petroleum products to other regions of the country -- without falling foul of the Jones Act, which regulates the shipping of goods between US ports. The department sent a letter to an unidentified company in January, saying that it could ship unfinished petroleum products to a foreign country where they could be blended to make finished products, such as gasoline, and then shipped back to the US without violating the Jones Act.
