Chevron Targets Law Firm for Work on Ecuador Suit

A New York judge has given Chevron the green light to sue a US law firm that helped Ecuadorean villagers win a multibillion-dollar environmental damages judgment against the company. US District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled this week that Chevron can sue Washington-based law firm Patton Boggs for its role in helping the villagers pursue their claims against the US oil major. Kaplan had previously ruled that the $9.5 billion Ecuadorean judgment against Chevron was the result of bribery and corruption orchestrated by the plaintiffs' main lawyer, Steven Donziger of New York (OD Mar.5'14). Meanwhile, a judge in Gibraltar recently determined that Chevron may proceed with a lawsuit against Russell Deleon, a Gibraltar resident who helped finance the plaintiffs' case.
