Alaska Seeks to Kickstart Exploration in Coastal Plain

The state of Alaska says it is no longer waiting for the US federal government to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for oil and gas exploration. It says it plans to carry out its own 3D seismic survey along the refuge's coastal plain, with work starting this winter. Gov. Sean Parnell said the state is taking the initiative to prevent the federal government from "locking up" ANWR and preventing exploration and development of the billions of barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas believed to exist beneath the refuge.
