Can Party Last for Surging Permian Producers?

It should be no surprise that "pure play" Permian Basin producers are outclassing rival US E&Ps this year considering the massive growth in oil output the resurgent West Texas play is delivering. But the extent to which Permian players are outperforming other, more diversified independents is officially staggering. Many Permian producers, which include Pioneer, Concho, Energen and Diamondback, have seen their stock prices roughly double year-to-date, compared to the 18% gain posted by S&P's E&P Index. Pioneer is so bullish on the Permian that it is now publicly touting its Spraberry/Wolfcamp shale play as the second-largest oil field in the world with total recoverable resources of 50 billion barrels of oil equivalent -- behind only Saudi Arabia's Ghawar with its nearly 160 billion boe (OD Aug.5'13).
