BNSF to Test LNG as Fuel for Trains

BNSF Railway, the second largest US consumer of diesel fuel after the Navy, will test natural gas as an alternative fuel to power its locomotives. If successful, the tests later this year could usher in a tectonic shift in the railway industry, which accounts for 6% of US diesel demand. Railways have been eyeing the possibility of LNG- powered trains in light of swelling natural gas supplies and falling prices. Canadian National Railway has been conducting a high-profile test of the technology that appears promising, but results of the pilot project are still being evaluated.
