The Lower Smackover unconventional oil play has been throwing a few curveballs at Southwestern Energy. The Houston-based gas producer is exploring 540,000 acres prospective to the Lower Smackover Brown Dense Formation in Louisiana and Arkansas as part of aggressive efforts to grow oil production in the face of persistently weak US natural gas prices.
