The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized requirements for natural gas producers to reduce pollution, opting for a more flexible, industry- friendly approach compared to its original proposals. The rule -- originally unveiled last summer -- is designed to reduce the quantity of smog-forming compounds and hazardous pollutants like benzene released during the "flowback" stages of hydraulic fracturing. During flowback, "fracking" fluids and hydrocarbons are brought back up out of the ground.
