Barents Sea Gets a Boost From Second Major Statoil Discovery

The excitement surrounding the Norwe- gian sector of the Barents Sea as an important new oil province intensified on Monday as Statoil declared its second major oil discovery in less than a year on license area PL 532. The Havis well — spudded just 7 kilo- meters (4.3 miles) from the Skrugard dis- covery made back in April 2011 — struck a 128 meter (420 feet) oil column, as well as 48 meters of gas, and Statoil has put recov- erable reserves at between 200 million and 300 million barrels of oil equivalent. Skru- gard is estimated to hold between 150 mil- lion and 250 million barrels (and potential- ly as much as 500 million bbl) of recover- able oil, bringing the combined estimate for the total recoverable reserves held in PL 532 to between 400 million boe and 600 million boe (OD Apr.4’11).
