The US government proposed new reporting and environmental regulations for unconventional oil and gas development on Friday, giving the federal government new authority to regulate hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” on public lands. The rule unveiled by the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) would require producers to publicly disclose the chemicals used in fracking -- a process that involves high-pressure pumping of water, sand and chemicals deep underground to break open “tight” rocks and release oil or gas.
