Total Spuds Elgin Relief Well

Total has been granted permission by the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc) to begin drilling a relief well to tackle the gas leak at the Elgin platform in the North Sea. The French major announced on Wednesday that it has spudded the relief well with the Transocean Sedeco 714 rig. A statement from Decc confirmed that the well, located 1.2 km from Elgin, will be drilled to 4,400 meters (14,435 feet) and should take around 180 days to complete.
