A total of 53 oil tanker spills requiringcleanup have occurred on Canadianshores in the past 10 years, according to areport issued by the federal governmentthis week.“In 53 incidents, it was determined thatsome cleanup or threat mitigation opera-tions were necessary,” said a documentsigned by Fisheries and Oceans MinisterKeith Ashfield. “For 51 of these incidents,the polluter assumed management of theresponse and the coast guard monitoredthe polluter’s response in the capacity offederal monitoring officer.”
