Reliance on the US motor fuel tax for federal transportation funding appears to be a crash waiting to happen, particularly as the country's oil demand flattens and budget problems worsen. But lawmakers in Congress cannot agree on whether federal gasoline and diesel taxes should be hiked to provide more funding for the Highway Trust Fund, or whether the fund should be supplemented with general federal funds or revenues collected from oil producers.
