While on the one hand gold major Gold Fields has had to stare down its striking work force at the conventionally mined Kloof Driefontein Complex (KDC), it has managed to clinch a great worker-management agreement at its strategic and fully mechanised South Deep mine, which is less than an hour's drive from Johannesburg.The formal agreement, struck with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on the implementation of a new operating model at South Deep, will see the creation of 400 more jobs and the introduction of full calendar operations (Fulco), which have proved very elusive in South African mining.
