Safety Excellence--US varsity establishes mining safety, health centre of excellence

The University of Utah, in the US, has created a new Centre for Mining Safety and Health Excellence, which will showcase the university's ability to assist in solving problems that have a profound effect on people working in the mining industry.The Utah State Board of Regents approved the new centre on July 13 and although the centre's scope includes the global mining community, its initial focus will be Utah, where the mining industry has played an important historical role in the state's development and continues to play a key role in the state's economy.The centre is operational and it is developing a funding base drawn from industry, government and private resources with the aid and guidance of its development committee, says University of Utah associate professor and chair of mining engineering Mike Nelson, who is also associate director of the new centre.
