THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT'S Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) last week deposited R7,5-million into the account of the provisionally liquidated Pamodzi Gold East Rand to enable it to fight off the dangerous rising water onslaught at the Grootvlei gold mine. Read on page 14 of this edition of Mining Weekly of DME deputy director-general Jacinto Rocha sending an SMS to confirm the R2,5-million-a-month pumping subsidy for January, February and March. The view of the Department of Water Affairs and Tourism's deputy director, Marius Keet, who is in charge of managing the Gauteng province's water quality, is that the mine has to be saved from flooding at all costs.
