Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: Saving life then saving organs?

The primary duty of intensive care practitioners is to support and replace organ function. We do this with the hope of organ recovery leading to preservation of life. When efforts to save life are unsuccessful, we have a secondary obligation to explore the patient's potential role as an organ donor, consistent with their or their surrogate decision maker's wishes and in consideration of overall societal benefit.
