De Beers' Penny bows out

THE chief executive officer of De Beers, Gareth Penny, is stepping down in the next few months. The announcement coincided with publication of the diamond company's financial results for the six months to end-June. Mr Penny, 48, said that after 22 years with the company (including five as chief executive), now is an appropriate time to leave, having overseen the response to the global financial crisis, and the company's subsequent recovery.
