LIHIR Gold Ltd is to make further cuts to the workforce at its Ballarat gold mine in Victoria as it put the troubled operation up for sale. Lihir said that despite encouraging results from ongoing exploration work at the property, the mine was unlikely to exceed production of 100,000oz/y and would not sustain large-scale bulk-mining techniques. As a result, the operation "would be unlikely to achieve the scale required to fit within the Lihir portfolio", the company said.
