Staking rush

THE Canadian mineral resource industry is very diverse, with significant production of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, nickel and iron ore, and, in the energy sector, uranium, coal, oil and gas. Moreover, with four operating diamond mines (three in the Northwest Territories and one in Ontario), Canada is the world's third-largest producer of the gem stone. Nevertheless, rocketing potash prices have catapulted this fertiliser component above the glamorous products of gold and diamonds. Saskatchewan is taking advantage of the situation because it possesses 53 percent of the global potash reserves; it was the source of around one-third of the world's total potash production of 48.27Mt in 2006 and 54.57Mt in 2007.
