First Quantum suspends Bwana Mkubwa

FIRST Quantum Minerals Ltd has suspended copper production at its Bwana Mkubwa copper-processing plant in Zambia owing to a shortage of copper ore at the facility."Bwana Mkubwa has exhausted all known sources of suitable (and) economically viable ore within Zambia," First Quantum said. The plant, which has a design capacity to produce up to 40,000t/y of copper cathode, ran out of copper ore this year, and has been relying on ore mined at the Lonshi mine across the Zambian border in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
