Higher prices boost Metorex

AFRICA-FOCUSED copper group Metorex Ltd has posted an 86 percent rise in profit for 2007 after a busy year for the company. Net income in the six months to the end of December was R279.3 million (35.9 million US dollars), up from R150.4 million for the previous corresponding period. Copper sales rose from 16.4Mlb (7,450t) to 21.4Mlb and gold sales were slightly higher at 60,389oz. Metorex achieved an average 3.35 US dollars/lb for copper for the period, up 4% on the same period of 2006, while gold sales averaged 721 US dollars/oz, up 27 percent.
