Newcrest posts loss after cutting hedges

FRESH from a massive hedge-book restructure, Australia's biggest gold producer Newcrest Mining Ltd said it could join in the global mining M&A frenzy within the next six months. Company chief executive Ian Smith said: "Hopefully in the next four to six months, we will be able to avail the market of some of the pursuits that we have been undertaking. "Our current gearing levels show that we have got a fair bit of room in our balance sheet to be moving, as I said, on any M&A opportunities that come along." Mr Smith said the company could be interested in some of the Australian assets of Newmont Mining Corp and Bar-rick Gold Corp, if the price was right.
