A compact hexagonal-shaped split ring radiating monopole with multiple band notched characteristics is presented in this article. The proposed antenna is printed on a 24 x 22.5 x 0.8 mm(3) FR-4 substrate and it operates in the WLAN 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz bands and WiMAX 3.5 GHz band. It yields an impedance bandwidth of 130 MHz centered at 2.45 GHz, 330 MHz centered at 3.5 GHz, and 1540 MHz centered at 5.2 GHz. The extraction of the effective material parameter of the radiating element is discussed, by which the metamaterial property existence and the notch creation is verified. A prototype of the proposed antenna is fabricated and the results are measured, which agrees greatly with the simulated results.
