Rio Tinto mulls Al output cuts at its high-cost smelters

Rio TintoAIcan, the world's largest aluminium producer, may cut output at some smelters because of market weakness, it said, as it announced lower-than-expected production at its Gove alumina refinery. "The group is reviewing production rates at the higher-cost smelting units, which may lead to production curtailment," the company said in its third-quarter operations review. "We haven't identified any specific plants otherthan our smelter in China," a Rio spokesman told MB. Rio is not considering closing any smelters, but looking at delaying the relining of some pots, which will reduce the impact, he said.
