VOESTALPINE SETS ITS SIGHTS ON THE BLACK SEA

Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine is planning to set up a new integrated steelworks on the Black Sea coast in southeastern Europe or Turkey in order to take advantage of soaring demand from the region, a spokesman for the company told MB last week. The company hopes to complete a feasibility study for the project, which is currently being compiled, and receive supervisory board approval by the end of 2008, allowing it to target start-up in 2012 or 2013. "The market in Eastern Europe is growing rapidly and we expect it to double by 2015," the spokesman told MB. "There is a particular demand from the auto industry and household goods manufacturers, which Voest is well placed to supply with its range of niche products."
