Russian iron and steel group Mechel will install three new continuous casters and build a new 1.7 million tpy blast furnace by 2011 as part of a 1.3 billion dollars revamp of its key Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. These projects, announced in the company's 2006 results conference call, will shift Chelyabinsk almost entirely to continuous casting and will allow hot metal production at the plant to rise to 6.5 million tpy.
