Brazil set to lose top ranking in world pig iron exporters list

SALVADOR, BAHIA - Brazil may this year lose its longstanding position as the world's biggest merchant pig iron exporting country, being overtaken by Russia, according to speakers at the Brazilian Metallurgical and Materials Assn (ABM)'s 8th steelmaking raw materials seminar. Brazil's exports could fall to some 5.7 million tonnes of merchant pig iron in 2007, down from 6.25 million tonnes in 2006 worth 1.6 billion dollars, the seminar revealed. Last year Russia was only marginally behind Brazil in the exporting ranks, with exports of 6.24 million tonnes.
