US imports of stainless rise as consumption falls year-on-year

US imports of stainless steel increased in the first seven months of this year even though US consumption declined compared with the corresponding period of last year, the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA) said on October 10. The Washington-based trade group said stainless steel imports totalled 399,708 short tons until July, up 13 percent from the first seven months of 2004, while US consumption fell 4 percent to 1.36 million tons in the same comparison. Import penetration reached 29 percent, up four percentage points from a year earlier.
