Thisstudyfocusesontheepitaxialorientationoftwopolyfluorenes(PF)namelypoly-(9,9-bis(n-octyl)fluorene-2,7-diyl)(PFO)andpoly(9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene-2,7-diyl)(PF2/6)onfrictiontransferredpoly(tetrafluoroethylene).PF2/6filmswithasingle-crystallikeorientationareobtainedonPTFEsubstratesafterproperannealingwhereasonlymarginalorientationisobservedforPFOfilms.Forbothpolymers,thecrystallinelamellaegrowessentiallyperpendiculartothePTFEchaindirectionandtheepitaxialconditionsweredeterminedas[001]PF//[001]PTFEand(010)PF//(100)PTFE.ForPF2/6sampleswithdifferentmolecularweightdistributions,thelamellarthicknesstendstoincreasewithincreasingaveragemolecularweightofthepolymer.Thecloseexaminationoftheselectedareaelectrondiffraction(SAED)patternscorrespondingtothe[010]PF26zonesupportsa214helicalconformationofthePF2/6chains.AsimplestructuralmodelbasedonatrigonalcellwithP3spacegroup,a=b=1.68nmandc=16.9nmcontainingatripletof214helicesaccountswellforthemainfeaturesoftheobservedelectrondiffractionpattern.Thethree214helicesofthetripletshowperiodicshortcontactseveryfifthmonomeralongthehelixaxis,suggestingthatthesupramolecularassemblyofthePF2/6chainsformingthetripletisstabilizedbyefficientπ-stackingbetweenfluorenemonomers.TheobserveddifferenceinorientationofPF2/6andPFOonPTFEsubstratessupportsanorientationmechanisminvolvingthePTFEmacrosteps.
