USDA's biotech regulatory overhaul postponed until November

The Obama administration's promised overhaul of agricultural biotechnology regulation, earlier forecast for this month, has been postponed until November, according to USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's semi-annual regulatory agenda posted at www. reginfo. gov/public/do/ eAgendaMain. The promised interim final rule, which now is projected to include a comment period ending in December, would represent the first comprehensive review and revision of regulations that ensure the safety of biotech crops since the rules were established in 1987. The rule is expected to bring biotech regulation into alignment with the Plant Protection Act and update current regulations in response to advances in biotechnology and the agency's accumulated experience in regulating biotech plants.
