EU member-states support list of permitted health claims

An EU-wide list of permitted health claims for use on food labels is in the cards for early next year, after it was approved last week by the European Commission's Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, EU Food Law reports.Government representatives backed a draft regulation that lists 222 health claims that have all received a positive opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)."Consumers can expect not to be misled by unsubstantiated, exaggerated or untruthful claims. Permitted claims have undergone a rigorous scientific assessment and are now more precise about health benefits," the European Commission says in a statement released Dec. 5. "But business operators have some flexibility in communicating their health claims to aid understanding," the commission adds.
