As drugs applied to organisms are metabolized via the liver,hepatocytes represent a useful and common study model.Primary hepatocytes are widely used to evaluate the toxiceffects of drugs and xenobiotics. A variety of metabolicparameters have been described to analyze the functional-ity of hepatocytes. Via those parameters, the toxic effectof substances can easily be quantified. One drawback ofprimary hepatocyte culture is the short duration of sur-vival and the high sensibility of the cells. Therefore, everystep towards a more gentle method of isolating the cellsincreases cell number and vitality and thus improves theoutcome of biomedical research applications.
