Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer from Heriot-Watt University has received a European Research Council (ERC) advanced award of US $3.34m (?3m) to “pursue frontier research to grow smart rocks that can talk to them about what actually goes on deep underground”. The university believes that ‘smart rocks’ could lead “to oil extraction and CO2 capture break- through”.
