NPD studies Barents Sea cores

In the autumn of 2015, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) had seven shallow wells drilled in the northeastern Barents Sea and is now study- ing drill cores. “Some 1,000m (3,281ft) of shallow stratigraphic drill cores are now being studied with a magnify- ing glass, tape measure and hydrochloric acid in the core store in Stavanger,” the NPD said. “Metre by metre, the cores are being examined and meticulously registered and logged. In the fall, external consultants will conduct biostratigraphic work (determine the age of sedimentary rocks by means of fossils) and geochemical studies.”
