Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern Lake Albert blocks could hold 2 Bn bbl of oil reserves. Any confirmed discovery would require major investment of up to US $4 Bn to progress to the development phase, said a government official. The potential for large discoveries along Congo’s eastern border has grown since UKbased Tullow Oil hit oil on the Ugandan side of Lake Albert in 2006. France’s Total and China’s state-owned CNOOC also operate there and Uganda’s government has estimated reserves at around 3.5 Bn bbl.
